The Sprinter

You build in bursts, and the five-hour session limit is the wall you meet.

What this says about you

You don’t dabble. When you sit down, it’s for a big push: a refactor, a feature, a long debugging session. That intensity is exactly what fills a five-hour session window. Your weekly allowance is usually fine; it’s the mid-afternoon You've hit your session limit that breaks your flow.

The good news: a session limit is the friendliest one to have. It resets within hours, Claude Code can wait and continue the task for you, and most of what drains a long session is habit, not plan size.

Your plan, honestly

Pro is probably enough if the session limit stops you once or twice a week. If it’s three or more times a week and it blocks real work, try Max 5x for a month; Anthropic describes it as five times Pro’s per-session allowance. If it’s rare, usage credits cover the odd sprint more cheaply than an upgrade.

This is our rule of thumb, not official advice, and it doesn’t promise a quota: neither Anthropic nor OpenAI publishes a fixed number of messages. See Claude Max vs Pro for the details.

Two tips that fit

  1. Start heavy work right after a reset. Check /usage before a big task. If the session bar is high, do small things until the reset time it shows, then start the sprint with a full window. Keep auto-continue on so a limit mid-task is a pause, not a stop.
  2. /clear between unrelated tasks. Every request resends the whole conversation, so one long session costs more per question as it grows. Clearing is free; /compact is a large request of its own.

Your Quotchi feature: The “At this pace” estimate

Quotchi’s Free “At this pace” estimate shows “~3:40 PM” in the menu bar when you’re on track to run out. Alerts at your own warning levels give you a heads-up, so you can pick a smaller task before the wall instead of after it.
