When does my Claude Code limit reset?

Every five hours for the session limit, and once a week at a fixed time for the weekly limit. Here’s where to find your exact time.

The direct answer

Your session limit resets every five hours, and your weekly limit resets once a week at a fixed time assigned to your account. You don’t have to work it out. Claude Code prints the exact time when you hit a limit (for example resets 3:45pm), /usage shows it at any time, and claude.ai lists your next reset under Settings → Usage.

The five-hour session reset

Anthropic’s help center says the session limit “resets every five hours”. Claude Code’s docs call it a rolling usage allowance. The pages we checked don’t say exactly what starts the five-hour clock, so don’t try to count it yourself. Use the reset time Claude Code shows you.

When the reset arrives, Claude Code can carry on for you. In an interactive session signed in with a claude.ai subscription, it waits and resumes the interrupted task shortly after the reset. That’s on by default from v2.1.234, and /rate-limit-options starts or cancels a wait. In the Desktop app’s Code tab, the session-limit card has an Auto-continue when limits reset checkbox. The weekly-limit card doesn’t have one.

Worked example of a session limit on one dayWork starts around 9:10am. The session limit is hit at 11:40am and the message says it resets at 2:10pm. Claude Code waits in the open session and continues the task after 2:10pm.9am10am11am12pm1pm2pm3pm4pm5pm11:40 limit hit2:10 reset■ working ■ waiting ■ continuesThe reset time comes from the message, not from counting five hours yourself.
A worked example. The 2:10pm reset comes from the message, not from adding five hours to a start time.

The weekly reset

For Max, Anthropic says the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account. Your reset day and time stay the same no matter when you start using Claude or when your subscription began. Pro also has a weekly limit that resets once a week. Settings → Usage shows your next reset.

A weekly-limit message includes the day as well as the time, for example resets Mon 12:00am. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable, so check which limit the message names.

Usage counts against the session and weekly allowances at the same time. A heavy few days can use up the weekly allowance even while session windows keep resetting. In that case the five-hour reset won’t get you working again. Only the weekly reset will.

Where to see your reset time

  • The limit message: You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm.
  • /usage: plan limits and when they reset. If the usage request is rate limited, it shows the last bars it loaded on this machine in the past 60 minutes, labeled Showing last-known usage.
  • claude.ai → Settings → Usage: your next reset times.
  • Status line: your script receives rate_limits.five_hour.resets_at and rate_limits.seven_day.resets_at as Unix epoch seconds. Claude Code re-runs the script when a window reaches its reset time. See the status line guide.

Or let a small app keep watch. Quotchi shows your Claude Code and Codex reset times in the Mac menu bar and can alert you as you approach a limit. A countdown reaching zero doesn’t prove your allowance is back, so Quotchi waits for a fresh reading before showing room.

Can I reset early?

Not on demand, but there are two exceptions. Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a one-time limit reset. Using it puts your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit back to full right away, and your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time afterwards. You can also turn on usage credits to keep working past a limit at pay-as-you-go rates. That doesn’t make the limit reset sooner.

Quotchi keeps “resets 3:45pm” one click away in your menu bar, for Claude Code and Codex alike. It’s Free and local-first, with no Quotchi account.

Worked examples

A session limit at lunchtime

At 11:40am Claude Code shows You've hit your session limit · resets 2:10pm. Leave the session open: Claude Code shows Continuing automatically at 2:10pm · esc to cancel and resumes the task after the reset. If your Mac slept more than about 30 minutes past 2:10pm, press Enter when it says Press enter to continue.

A weekly limit on Thursday

The message reads You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am. Session resets won’t help until Monday, and Claude Code won’t start an automatic wait for a reset more than 24 hours away. Your options: usage credits for the urgent work, a limit reset if Settings → Usage offers one, another tool, or a break until Monday.

Using a one-time limit reset

Settings → Usage shows Reset for free for your weekly limit. You use it on Friday. Your weekly limit is back to full immediately, and your next weekly reset still happens at its usual Monday time.

Plan your work around the reset

Knowing the reset time is only useful if you use it. A few habits that work:

  1. Look before a big task. Run /usage before starting a long refactor. If the session bar is high and the reset is close, do small jobs first and start the big one with a fresh window.
  2. Learn your weekly reset slot. It’s fixed for your account, so it’s worth remembering. Save the heaviest work of the week for the days right after it, not the day before.
  3. Leave long tasks running at the limit. With automatic continue on, a session limit mid-task just pauses the work. Keep the terminal open and permission prompts in mind, since the continued task still asks before running commands.
  4. Keep the number in view. A status line showing five_hour and seven_day percentages, or a menu bar app, means you see the reset coming instead of discovering it.
  5. Decide your fallback in advance. Usage credits, another tool, or a planned break. Picking under pressure usually means paying more than you needed to.

If you hit limits most weeks despite all this, the reset time isn’t the problem; the allowance is. See Claude Max vs Pro.

Common mistakes and myths

“My weekly limit resets on my billing date.”

Anthropic says the weekly reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.

“I can calculate the session reset from my first message.”

Anthropic doesn’t document what starts the five-hour clock. Use the time in the message or /usage.

“Restarting Claude Code resets the clock.”

No. Limits are on your account, shared with claude.ai and Desktop. Exiting also cancels a pending automatic continue.

“A countdown reaching zero means I have room.”

Usually, but confirm it. /usage fetches fresh numbers, and Claude Code drops a window from the status line data once its reset time passes, until new data arrives.

What changed recently

As of October 9, 2026: Claude Code v2.1.234 added automatic continue after a usage limit, on by default for claude.ai sign-ins, with /rate-limit-options to start or cancel a wait. Anthropic’s help center documents occasional one-time limit resets that don’t move your weekly reset day.

FAQ

How often does the Claude Code limit reset?

The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets once a week, at a fixed time assigned to your account.

Does my weekly reset depend on when I subscribed?

No. Anthropic says the weekly reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins.

Where can I see my exact reset time?

In the limit message itself, in /usage inside Claude Code, and under Settings → Usage on claude.ai.

Can Anthropic support reset my limit?

The help center describes occasional one-time limit resets for eligible plans, used when you choose. Otherwise, wait for the reset or turn on usage credits to keep going.

Does Claude Code continue automatically after the reset?

Yes, from v2.1.234 in interactive sessions signed in with a claude.ai subscription, as long as the session stays open. It doesn’t start on its own for resets more than 24 hours away.

Does using a limit reset change my weekly reset day?

No. Anthropic says your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time after you use one.

Why does my status line stop showing the reset time?

Claude Code drops a rate-limit window from the status line data once its reset time passes, and re-runs your script at that moment. It reappears after the next API response.
