Something looks off?
Let’s fix it.

Find what you’re seeing below. The setup check in Settings → AI tools usually names the problem in one line, so it’s a good first stop.

Quotchi looking alert

The menu bar shows a dash

“Claude —” means there’s no current reading for that tool. Open the panel: the tool’s row says why (for example Needs sign-in or Needs setup) with a Set up button. Then run the setup check.

“Claude Code not found” or “needs sign-in”

  • Not found: Quotchi reads Claude through Claude Code, the command-line tool. Having only the Claude app installed isn’t enough. Install Claude Code, or use the Claude app reader instead.
  • Needs sign-in: run claude in Terminal once and sign in with your subscription account. The Claude app’s sign-in isn’t shared with Claude Code.
  • Signed in with an API key or a cloud provider: those sign-ins have no plan limits. Sign in with your Claude Pro or Max account.
  • Managed by your organization: if your company manages Claude Code’s settings, Quotchi doesn’t run its reader there. The Claude app reader may still work.
  • Newer than Quotchi knows: a brand-new Claude Code release can change its format. Quotchi keeps your last reading; check Settings → Updates for a Quotchi update.
  • Several installs: Settings → AI tools → Claude → Connection details shows the exact path and version Quotchi uses.

Codex shows no limits

  • Check the version in Settings → AI tools → Codex: Quotchi needs Codex CLI 0.160 or later. Update with npm install -g @openai/codex@latest (or your package manager).
  • Run codex login and choose Sign in with ChatGPT. API-key sign-ins have no plan limits to show.
  • Make sure codex actually runs in Terminal. A desktop app being installed doesn’t mean the CLI works.
  • Some plans report only a weekly window, or only some limits. Quotchi shows what Codex reports and labels the rest as unknown.

Readings look old, or say “last known”

Quotchi checks every five minutes, after your Mac wakes and when you reconnect. It pauses while you’re offline, while the Mac sleeps and for hidden tools. Older readings stay labeled as last known instead of pretending to be current.

Choose Refresh in the panel (or press ⌘R). Manual checks are limited to once a minute, and failed checks back off; the panel shows the next check time. A countdown reaching zero doesn’t prove your allowance is back, so Quotchi waits for a fresh reading before saying a tool has room.

The Claude app or Gemini reader isn’t working

  • Permission: Quotchi must be switched on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. If it’s on but still not working (for example after moving the app), switch it off and on again, or remove it with − and add it back.
  • The page must be open: the Claude app needs Settings → Usage open; Gemini needs Settings → Usage limits open. They can sit behind other windows.
  • English only: both readers recognise the English layout. Another app language shows “labels are missing or unclear”.
  • Numbers look old: refresh inside the Claude app or Gemini; Quotchi reads what the page shows.
  • Gemini never shows reset times, and the Gemini CLI isn’t read. That’s expected.

I don’t get alerts

  1. Settings → Notifications → turn on Allow gentle nudges and accept the macOS prompt.
  2. If you declined it earlier, use Open Notification Settings and allow Quotchi in macOS.
  3. Choose Send a test alert. If that arrives, real alerts will too. Check Focus modes and, with Pro, Quotchi’s quiet hours.

Alerts only fire from fresh readings, so a tool without a current reading won’t alert.

The widget is empty

Turn on Share readings with the macOS widget in Settings → General, keep Quotchi running, then add the widget again from macOS Edit Widgets. macOS decides how often widgets refresh, so they can lag the menu bar by a few minutes. Widgets only work with the copy of Quotchi in your Applications folder.

quotchi: command not found

Install it in Settings → General → Terminal command. It links ~/.local/bin/quotchi; if your shell can’t find it, add that folder to your PATH, for example by adding this line to ~/.zshrc, then open a new Terminal window:

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

If it says Quotchi isn’t running, open the app: the command reads the readings the running app keeps.

Status line problems

If Claude Code’s status line looks wrong after you turned on Quotchi’s segment, open Settings → AI tools → Claude → More ways to connect and turn Show limits in Claude Code’s status line off, then choose Remove and restore previous. Quotchi puts your original status line back exactly as it was and keeps a dated backup of settings.json next to it. If your organization manages the status line, Quotchi leaves it alone.

Updates

Settings → Updates shows your version and has Check for updates; from 0.7.6 the panel’s ⋯ menu has Check for updates… too. Quotchi 0.7.4 and later install updates themselves; 0.7.3 and earlier need one manual update from the install guide. An update keeps your settings, history and Pro license.

Install & first launch

Quotchi is signed and notarized by Apple. On first launch macOS may ask whether to open an app downloaded from the internet; choose Open. If macOS instead says the app is damaged or the developer can’t be verified, don’t work around it: delete the download, get a fresh copy from quotchi.com/install and tell us.

Can’t find the sloth? On a crowded menu bar macOS hides icons behind the notch. Quit a few menu bar apps (the sloth has no right-click menu; quit Quotchi from the panel’s ⋯ → Quit Quotchi or ⌘Q while the panel is open), or press ⌃⌥Q to open the panel from anywhere.
